Hue

Hue (pronounced "whey") appears to be a very liveable, likeable city. We took a boat down the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda. On the boat, the owners were trying to sell us cards, clothing, book marks, and drinks. When they brought the drinks Joel and Denis asked, "What? No Pepsi?" They only had off-brands of sodas. Next thing we knew they were pulling up to the river bank and one woman ran across the road. She came back with cans of cold Coke and Pepsi to sell us. Such is life in Vietnam. The Vietnamese find ways to accommodate us (and sell things) in unexpected ways.

We continued down the river to the pagoda. This is the pagoda where Thic Quang Duc, the Buddhist priest who self-immolated in June 1963, came from. The self-immolation was in protest of the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government. His car, the one in the famous photo of his burning body, is usually on display at this pagoda. Today, it was out for maintenance with only a photo in it's place.
