Hoi An is my new favorite place. It's just south of Da Nang. We crossed the mountain pass between Hue and Da Nang today after a stop at a beach to swim -- in a futile attempt to cool off. South of the 17th parallel we're seeing the remains of the U.S. presence here forty years ago in the war, the one we call the Vietnam War and that the Vietnamese call the American War. Those photos are on my camera and I cannot upload them for the blog.
We will have 4 nights in Hoi An and that's good. Its nice not to be moving and Hoi An is beautiful. As we head south the food is getting better. The insistence of the vendors seems to be getting worse. All through dinner we got bombarded. I broke down and bought a toy from a persistent little boy who circled our dinner table -- despite the fact that he called me "darling."
Our landmark when we walk around is the An Hoi Bridge which is lit at night.
My favorite moment: finding Hillary in a photo at a rest stop along the road between Hue and Da Nang.
