Bruges

We spent the day wandering Bruges, a well-preserved medieval town in Belgium. It's known for its many kinds of beer, waffles, Flemish fries (friets) and canals. We tasted three of them (tasty) and wandered beside the fourth. It also has the only Michelangelo sculpture outside of Italy, "Madonna and Child".

Economic ruin in the fifteenth century helped preserve Bruges' medieval character. The progress of the ensuing centuries simply left this once-bustling town behind. It's a beautiful place -- and even more so if you get out early enough that you aren't swimming through a sea of tourists.
